Overcoming Depression

Mindfulness-based approaches are scientifically proven to help people with a range of mental health problems such as:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Insomnia  

 Mindfulness-based stress management and Mindfulness-based Pain and Illness Management programmes use an approach called 'mindfulness'  recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Mindfulness-based therapy could be helping to prevent thousands of people from relapsing into depression every year," said Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation. Meditation affects and trains the brain to be more present-focused and therefore to spend less time anticipating future negative events. This is one of the reasons why meditation is effective at reducing the recurrence of depression.

 

Mindfulness-based approaches teach people to pay attention to the present moment, rather than worrying about the past or the future, and to let go of the negative thoughts that can tip them over into depression. It also gives people a greater awareness of their own body, helping them to identify the signs of oncoming depression and ward off the episode before it starts.  It's so effective that it could reduce the risk of a person experiencing a recurrence of depression by over 50 per cent.
